D5987 Dental Code Meaning:

Commissure Splint. A device placed between the lips that helps in achieving increased opening between the lips.Provisional splinting is done to stabilize mobile (loose) teeth and maintain them in the position before periodontal surgery due to bone loss. Teeth are cleaned, isolated and no anesthesia is used, however, in some cases teeth is cut and anesthesia should be used. The materials used may vary, however, the common one is metal wire or braided fibers. Wire is then placed along the teeth, bonded and cured.

Maxillofacial prosthodontics is a specialty of dentistry which deals with the rehabilitation of patients with acquired and congenital defects of the head and neck region. These range from minor to major functional disabilities combined with cosmetic disfigurement.

Prostheses are often needed to replace missing areas of bone or tissue and restore oral functions such as swallowing, speech, and chewing. In other instances, a prosthesis for the face or body may be indicated for cosmetic and psychosocial reasons. Prosthetic devices may also be created to position or shield facial structures during radiation therapy.
